2013 Silverado 2500HD Bi-Fuel CNG

Wednesday, September 5th 2012. | Review

With the increasing price of gasoline and diesel in the United States, along with the rest of the world in general, facing an energy crisis, it was a matter of time before American car manufacturers started looking into other sources to fuel their vehicles, especially larger trucks. Under these circumstances GM has introduced a bi-fuel Silverado that runs on gasoline and CNG (compressed natural gas). The bi-fuel Silverado will have the ability to switch over to either form of fuel effortlessly; this means it will be able to switch over to gasoline automatically if the CNG tank gets empty. The CNG kit will be available on the extended cab version of the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD as the kit takes up a certain amount of space. The bi-fuel Silverado will have Chevy’s Vortec 6.0 liter engine that will be able to run on both gasoline and CNG. This Silverado will be available in 2 wheel drive as well as 4 wheel drive and will have a 6 speed automatic transmission.

CNG is a fuel that is available in abundance inAmericaand several politically stable countries which will help keep the price of CNG much lower than gasoline and diesel and should also keep the price stable. Also since CNG’s price is not pegged to the price of gasoline it remains stable in this regard as well. Thus owners of the bi-fuel 2013 Silverado will be able to save a lot of money using CNG.

Various figures such as price, power output and fuel consumption are not stated by GM at the moment but what is known is that the CNG enabled Silverado will have a range of up to 650 miles when both the gasoline and the 17 gallon CNG tank are used and will have towing power comparable to that of a normal Silverado since the CNG kit weighs only around 450 lbs (remember that CNG does not burn with the ferocity of gasoline, so fuel mileage will be slightly lower). The bi-fuel Silverado will have no problems getting the engine running in cold weather since the engine will always start on gasoline and then switch over to CNG. Moreover, the kit is completely safe and has gone through various safety measures for complete safety. The problem, however, is that CNG stations are not as abundant as gasoline stations, however, there has been a 26 percent increase in CNG stations across various states, so the amount of CNG stations is increasing at an impressive rate.

The Bi-fuel Chevy Silverado is available both for commercial and noncommercial use. The truck along with its CNG kit is completely covered by GM’s warranty for both kinds of owners. Moreover since CNG is a clean burning fuel it will also appeal to environmentalists and people who are concerned about the environment and want to bring down the pollution caused by motor-vehicles.
