2014 Chevy Silverado Engines
For 2014 the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will receive 3 “EcoTec3″ engines. One V6 and two V8′s, they all employ similar tech. Chevy touts that no matter what trim or engine you pick you will get all the advantages of the EcoTec3 technology. They went with a rather risky strategy here, they opted for an all new truck for both Chevy and GMC and at the same time they are introducing an all new engine line-up. But, with Chevy and GMC being the last of the big 3 to do a thorough update on their truck line up they are forced to make a big and lasting impression. From what we’ve learned about these new engines they will do just that!
I should say at this point we do not have power-level numbers yet, but we do have plenty of info to keep you going untill we get those numbers. The base model 2014′s get a 4.3 liter v6. It seems GM has opted to build a new engine rather than utilize a v6 from elsewhere in its lineup like Ford has done. For this purpose the 3.6 liter direct injection from the Camaro and CTS springs to mind. But instead GM has opted for a new v6, which is part of its new EcoTec3 lineup. From there we move on to the mid-range 5.3 liter v8 small block and finally for the high-end we have the bigger 6.2 liter v8.
All three engines utilize direct injection and variable valve timing for increased power and efficiency. The engines also feature AFM, which is Active Fuel Management, the v6 will go down to 4 cylinders just like the v8′s. It is GM’s second generation of this system, which will activate during certain (lower load) conditions. It is achieved by using oil pressure to deactivate the lifters for certain cylinders, which in turn will shut the valves for those cylinders. According to GM this system is more aggressive and will be active up to 20% longer than the old system (We assume this is due to more power being available allowing the engines to run on 4 cylinders for longer). We don’t have fuel economy numbers yet, but based on all this new tech, they should be quite impressive!
