A 1999 Suburban and a 2003 Escalade ESV

Thursday, June 20th 2013. | News, Suburban

What do these to seemingly randomly chosen cars have in common? They were both driven by Tony Soprano, or in many cases he was driven around in them. Sadly, yesterday, James Gandolfini at 51 years old passed away while on vacation in Italy with his family. He will be most definitely missed, he was one of my favorite actors. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

I thought I’d take a look back at the two Chevy-truck-based vehicles he drove in the Sopranos, as they played such an integral role in what to me is the part he was most famous for. First of all we have the 1999 Chevy Suburban based on the GMT400 platform. The car played a prominent role throughout the first 3 seasons of the Sopranos. 1999 was the final year the GMT400 Suburban was available, it could be had with a 5.7 liter or 7.4 liter gasoline V8 or a 6.5 liter turbo diesel V8. In the Sopranos Tony drove what I assume was one of the gassers as I would have remembered if it sounded like a diesel, it had a brush guard up front with a couple of extra lights on it. Before the car was auctioned off James Gandolfini signed the vanity mirror. The picture above is a still from the series.

Throughout the last 4 seasons Tony drove and was driven around in a 2003 Cadillac Escalade ESV. Even though I loved the Suburban and was sad to see it go, as it really was part of the show, the Escalade was an SUV more befitting of a prominent boss in the mafia. The Escalade in 2003 was based on the GMT800 platform, which right after the GMT400 platform Tony’s previous car was built on. It was available with either a 5.3 liter Vortec V8 or a high output 6.0 Vortec V8. Before the car was actioned off Mr. Gandolfini signed both the passenger side dash and the driver’s side sun visor.
